At Shanan, discipleship is woven into the daily life of our school and reflects our commitment to “train up a child in the way that he should go” (Proverbs 22:6). Each year, our School Chaplain prayerfully selects a central Scripture theme, which provides the foundation for our weekly devotion topics.
These daily moments of reflection help nurture consistent engagement with God’s Word across our school community. In addition, learners actively participate in daily devotions within their own learning centres, often preparing and sharing short Scripture-based thoughts with their peers. Senior learners are further equipped through weekly discipleship input from the Chaplain and are then entrusted to lead small group sessions with both peers and younger learners.
Through this intentional structure, learners are encouraged to grow in their understanding of Scripture while developing confidence, leadership and a personal walk with God that is lived out in both word and action.
Scripture memorization is an intentional part of our Christian education approach. It is widely recognised as a powerful tool for spiritual formation, helping learners internalize God’s Word so that it shapes their thinking, choices and character in daily life.
By committing Scripture to memory, learners are equipped with Biblical truth that brings guidance, encouragement and strength in every situation. It also strengthens their ability to understand and confidently share their faith with others.
Within the ACE (Accelerated Christian Education) curriculum, Scripture memory is built into each stage of learning, ensuring consistent exposure to God’s Word alongside academic content. This integration supports both character development and the formation of a strong, Christ-centred worldview.
At Shanan, Scripture is not only learned—it is lived.
Our senior learners are given meaningful opportunities to serve beyond the classroom through local and cross-border mission trips. Over the years, we have ministered in Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho, Venda, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
These outreach experiences take learners into schools, orphanages, churches, homes and special needs environments, where they share the Gospel through both word and action. Programmes presented by ourlearners are designed to encourage and uplift communities and include worship, drama skits and a Bible message.
Learners also build relationships through sport and play and contribute practically by assisting with painting, paving, and supporting schools in day-to-day tasks. In doing so, they learn what it means to serve with humility and joy.
To support these initiatives, funds raised through civvies days go directly into our missions fund, helping to make these outreaches more affordable for Shanan families. These experiences are central to the Shanan journey – shaping learners to give generously, serve faithfully, lead with confidence and live out their faith in action.
At Shanan, worship is a joyful and meaningful part of school life, expressed through learner-led songs as well as sessions led by our church worship leaders. Our Shanan worship band is being intentionally developed, raising up learners to confidently lead worship at assemblies and school events.
We also host dedicated evening worship gatherings where parents are invited to join in worship and prayer for our school, families and community. It is a special privilege to see learners of all ages, including the youngest, actively participating in worship and freely expressing their love for God.
